Mozambique: SERNIC switched from Interior Ministry to PGR - AIM report

The United Nations says that the disarmament of Renamo is crucial to the restoration of constitutional normality and creating a favourable environment for peace in Mozambique, reports Notícias this morning.
According to Valeria Melo Campos, senior analyst for the Africa Division of the UN Political Affairs, at a time when negotiations between the government and Renamo are underway, the disarmament of Renamo is the biggest challenge in the achievement of effective peace in the country.
“We have a serious problem in Mozambique that needs to be resolved, which is the question of Renamo being at the same time the largest opposition party and also maintaining an armed wing and exercising military action. This is an anomaly that does not exist in other countries, and hampers the functioning of constitutional normality. We hope this is an opportunity [to address it],” Campos, a former UN Women representative in the country, said.
In an interview with UN Radio, the analyst expressed the UN’s readiness to support Mozambique in the disarmament of Renamo, while encouraging domestic efforts for effective dialogue to achieve peace.
