The British Minister for International Development, Nicholas Hurd, announced yesterday in Maputo that the British government is making 11 million pounds (about 15.9 million US dollars) available to support Mozambique in its fight against the consequences of the “El Nino” weather phenomenon.
“El Nino” is the anomalous warming of the surface waters in the east and central Pacific, which disrupts international weather patterns. In southern Africa it produces drought, and currently most of Mozambique south of the Zambezi river is facing severe drought conditions, with a devastating impact on agriculture and livestock.
