A man who has so far not been identified was kidnapped on Thursday night in the central Maputo neighbourhood of Sommerschield, according to the independent television station STV, citing eyewitness accounts.
The victim, described only as a white man, was driving a grey Range Rover with a South African number plate, when his path was blocked by a white Toyota Chaser. A third car, of unidentified make, then quickly drew up behind the Range Rover.
Two men emerged from the third vehicle, fired two shots into the air, grabbed their victim, and dragged him into their car.
A security guard named Antonio Lurenco said he had seen the kidnapping at a distance, but everything took place so quickly that he was unable to intervene.
Police soon arrived on the scene but made no statement to the reporters who had gathered. When STV contacted the spokesperson for the Maputo City Police Command, Orlando Mudumane, he said he had no information about the incident.
This is the latest in a string of kidnappings, usually of business people, that has hit Mozambican cities since late 2011. It comes just three days after the Supreme Court granted a habeas corpus request by Danish Abdul Satar, thus ordering the release of a man detained by the Mozambican police on suspicion of being one of the masterminds behind the kidnappings.
