Development Programme (UNDP) on Friday announced the availability of 66 million US dollars for the reconstruction of the districts affected by islamist terrorism in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado.
According to the deputy director of the UNDP Africa regional office, Noura Hamladji, this sum will be used, as from 2023, in the Cabo Delgado districts of Palma, Mocimboa da Praia, Macomia, Nangade, Ancuabe and Quissanga.
Speaking after she was received by Mozambican Prime Minister Adriano Maleiane, Hamladji said the funds are intended to guarantee security in the area, create means of subsistence for the displaced people who want to return to their zones of origin, and re-establish administrative and commercial activities in the districts severely affected by terrorism.
“We have a pillar of resilience which is the stabilization and reconstruction of Cabo Delgado in the six districts, and we want to do much more”,
Hamladji added. “I have spoken with the Prime Minister about the plan to speed up our support to this province, with programmes with those of the government”.
She declared that UNDP, in addition to its support for Cabo Delgado, has other areas of interest, including governance, decentralization, elections and justice.
“UNDP will continue to invest more in the development of this country, with a larger office”, she said. “Now we have approved aid for five years which covers various pillars, such as governance, decentralization and elections.
She added that another important pillar in which UNDP wishes to invest is the environment. UNDP wants “more ambitious programmes” on climate change. This would involve training staff in Mozambican ministries so that they can attract finance for climate questions.
Hamladji said UNDP is mobilizing finance from the Global Climate Fund, and already has a promise of 50 million dollars for water management.
