In an expression of commiseration with Afonso Dhlakama’s family, the government of Sofala sent a delegation headed by the provincial director of Industry and Commerce, Josefa Sing Sang, to the funeral of Afonso’s uncle in Chibabava at the weekend.
The provincial government’s gesture has garnered widespread public support in Beira city, with residents praising the preferring of cultural solidarity over political differences.
Afonso Dhlakama belongs to a traditional extended family from Chibabava, a district in southern Sofala province. His father, now over 80 years of age, is also a ‘régulo’ (traditional chief) in the Mangunde region, the Renamo leader’s birthplace.
Afonso Dhlakama did not attend his uncle’s funeral.
