President Nyusi and leader of the main opposition group Renamo Mr Afonso Dhlakama, have announced the start of a new phase in the negotiations and decided to set up an international contact group to support the peace process in Mozambique.
Following the agreement to establish two specialised working groups, addressing decentralisation and military issues respectively, direct negotiations between the two sides can now focus on a sustainable solution building on the progress achieved under international mediation. It is also encouraging to note that the temporary truce continues to be respected by both sides.
These are welcome developments as they underline the determination by both parties to set aside differences and to work towards peace and reconciliation.
The European Union appreciates the recognition of its contribution to this positive outcome and stands ready to continue supporting the peace process as a member of the contact group and in any way possible.
