UN Women on Monday graduated a total of 960 women in different vocational areas from areas affected by armed violence in Sofala province, central Mozambique, under the Peace and Development Project.
“This is a routine project, which is based on training women residing in armed conflict zones in different areas of economic activity,” said UN Women Programme Officer, Moisés Kakano.
The group graduating today from the UN programme is the third since the project was first implemented in central Mozambique, Kakano said.
The training courses are provided by the Zambezi University, lasting six months, and the beneficiaries are equipped with knowledge for the labour market.
The training includes the areas of agriculture, beekeeping, fish farming, electricity, cutting and sewing, cooking, mechanics and construction.
In total, the project expects to support around 10,000 women.
Kakano said that the women receive work tools from the training areas at the end of the training.
After a period of insecurity with armed attacks led by the ‘military junta’ since August 2019, an armed dissidence of Renamo, the main opposition party, central Mozambique is now experiencing a calm, since the death in combat of the leader of the group Mariano Nhongo, on 11 October.
The junta’s actions resulted in the deaths of 30 people.
