The response to UN calls for financial support for Mozambique in facing the Covid-19 pandemic and armed attacks in Cabo Delgado stands at 5% and 20% respectively, almost a month after being launched, the organisation reports.
The data are part of a summary by the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) of the humanitarian situation in Mozambique released earlier this week and consulted by Lusa today. [Read the full ‘Mozambique – Situation Report’ HERE]
In coordination with the Mozambican government, the United Nations on June 4 launched a call to international partners to raise US$68.1 million (€61.6 million) for urgent support to Mozambique to combat Covid-19, and has so far received US$3.5 million (€3.12 million), or 5.1% of the target amount.
The Covid-19 plan covers actions up until December and prioritises the needs of the most vulnerable, including “people living in poverty, disability, people with HIV, the elderly, displaced people and communities at risk”.
It is thought that about three million people are covered, out of a total of eight million that the UN estimates need assistance, in an operation involving 57 sector partners.
On the same day, a US$35.4 million (€31.5 million) appeal was launched to support people displaced by armed violence in Cabo Delgado), of which US$7 million (€6.2 million), or 19.8%, has so far been received.
The flight of the population has increased rapidly as violence has increased since the beginning of the year, says the UN, estimating that there are now 211,485 people who have left everything and sought safe haven in other villages in a conflict that has already killed at least 700 people.
Adding in the already-impoverished host communities, it is estimated that there are 712,000 people in need of help. The UN plan aims to support 354,000, or about half, by the end of the year.
