The United Kingdom in Mozambique today announced an increase of £7.55 million for humanitarian support to Mozambique over the next three years, with a view to reaching the most vulnerable with long-term, sustainable assistance. This will be channelled through existing FCDO partners.
As part of a global humanitarian increase by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office, Mozambique has received an additional £7.55 million for its humanitarian programme over the course of 2024.
The British government’s humanitarian spending will rise from £3 million to £10.55 million, recognising the growing needs of people affected by conflict and climate disasters.
The UK High Commissioner in Mozambique, Helen Lewis said:
‘‘The UK recognises that across the country there continue to be unmet needs arising from conflict and climate disasters. The most vulnerable people are bearing most of the burden of these events and so we want to reach out to them with timely and appropriate assistance.’
The United Kingdom will contribute to strengthening ongoing projects. The emphasis will be on anticipatory action and preparation for disasters or displacement, the provision of birth certificates and national identity cards to some of the most vulnerable people affected by conflict and support for the localisation of humanitarian response.
The UK’s Development Director in Mozambique, Dominic Ashton, said:
‘Humanitarian response is an essential component of the UK’s partnership with Mozambique, as reducing needs contributes to better development outcomes and has a positive impact on peace and stability.’
The increase is expected to reach a further 250,000 people over the next three years and provide predictable funding for existing partners.
