The UK government on Monday expressed interest in providing humanitarian assistance to displaced people (IDPs) in Cabo Delgado, President Filipe Nyusi conveyed yesterday, August 25, on his official Facebook page, Sala da Paz reports.
According to the president, the interest was expressed by Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister for Commonwealth Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Commonwealth Affairs and Development of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, during a telephone call last Monday, August 24th.
“The British minister condemned the terrorist acts in Cabo Delgado and expressed his country’s interest in supporting the actions of the Northern Integrated Development Agency, including humanitarian support for the displaced,” reads the President’s note, translated in full below.
“Compatriots,
“Yesterday, 24 August 2020, I made telephone contact with Lord Tariq Ahmad of Wimbledon, Minister of State (Minister for South Asia and the Commonwealth) at the Foreign Office of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, within the framework of the strengthening our relations and following up the issues raised during my visit to the United Kingdom in January 2020.
“Among several topics covered, we exchanged experiences on the management of Covid-19 pandemic response measures, the ongoing steps leading to the Commonwealth Heads of State and Government Summit scheduled for 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda.
“The British minister condemned the terrorist acts in Cabo Delgado and expressed his country’s interest in supporting the actions of the Northern Integrated Development Agency [ADIN], including humanitarian support for the displaced.”
