Uganda’s Justice Minister Kahinda Otafiire has said the army will defend the country against politicians using the “People Power” slogan to create “anarchy”, the Daily Monitor newspaper reports.
The slogan is used by opposition politician Bobi Wine, a musician-turned-politician, and his backers to rally support against President Yoweri Museveni’s government.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has declared that he will challenge Mr Museveni for the presidency in the 2021 election.
“I have heard all this noise about People Power; which power do you represent? Where are these people?” Mr Otafiire, who is a major general in the army, is quoted as saying at a meeting in the south-western town of Kashenshero.
“We have heard that some youth are being mobilised to cause anarchy and fight government. It is not wrong to oppose but this should not be through violence.”
He said real power was exercised through the ballot box.
“We will guard this power using the army and air force. Whoever tries to disrupt this power, you are welcome but what will come next, don’t regret… Yes, you can attempt to remove government through violence. I don’t say it is not possible but know it is not easy and be prepared for the consequences.”
Bobi Wine has condemned the minister’s remarks in a tweet, saying the military should remain non-partisan.
Says our Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, in total disregard for Article 208(2) of our Constitution which decrees that the army shall be non-partisan, national in character, patriotic, disciplined & subordinate to civilian authority. But #PeoplePower shall prevail pic.twitter.com/ZDco6bGKF2
