Ugandan army spokesman Brig Felix Kulayigye has told the BBC that Uganda has a good relationship with Kenya, and so the Ugandan army cannot invade the neighbouring country.
His words of reassurance follow a spate of tweets written by the president’s son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also an army general. Those messages had angered some Kenyans and raised an army of Twitter trolls who responded with video and photo memes scoffing at the idea that Uganda’s army could invade Kenya.
The president’s son has since been dropped from his position as the commander of Uganda’s land forces, but promoted to the country’s highest rank of general.
Some social media users have described his tweets as “reckless” and said that they could lead to a diplomatic row between the two neighbouring countries.
Among his various tweets, the president’s son said he was disappointed that former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta left power because he would easily have won another election.
On Tuesday morning the president’s son said his mission, and that of the younger generation as a whole, was to work towards an East African federation whose army he would lead:
After we create our East African Federation. President Museveni will be President, Afande Ruto will be Vice President, My brother Uhuru will be Foreign Affairs Minister. I just want to be CDF of the East African forces. 😊 pic.twitter.com/4hDOjP7Fn8

Kenya’s government has not yet officially responded, and Uganda’s foreign ministry earlier issued a statement distancing itself from the tweets but without referring to Gen Kainerugaba by name.
This was not the first time that Gen Kainerugaba had tweeted controversial comments on international affairs – he previously expressed support for the Tigrayan rebels who are fighting the government in Ethiopia, and also commented on the war in Ukraine.
Union is a MUST! No honourable men can allow these artificial, colonial borders anymore. If we our generation has men then these borders must fall! pic.twitter.com/60E9nzKIqI

As I told my father H.E. @KagutaMuseveni we younger East Africans have decided that we will be one nation! No amount of threats will stop us from that goal!

Had a good discussion with my great father this morning. Apparently, my tweets scared Kenyans too much? He will announce the changes. There is a special prayer I shall make for our army. 🙏
