The University of Coimbra (UC) has signed an agreement which boosts academic, scientific and cultural cooperation with the Municipality of Quelimane, in Mozambique.
The protocol was signed on Monday (21-02) at the presentation ceremony of the book, “Quelimane, Uma História Cheia de Estórias” [Quelimane: A History Full of Stories], co-organized by the UC and the Portugal Mozambique Chamber of Commerce and with the help of European deputy Maria Manuel Leitão Marques.
The partnership between the two entities – signed on the occasion by the UC Vice-Rector for External Relations and Alumni, João Nuno Calvão da Silva, and Mayor of Quelimane, Manuel de Araújo – aims to bolster academic, scientific and cultural cooperation in the areas of spatial planning, cultural heritage, environment and health.
“The signing of this protocol with the Municipality of Quelimane is another step in strengthening the position of the University of Coimbra as a university central to the entire Portuguese-speaking space. This cooperation agreement will be very effective in bringing the Lusophone peoples closer together, namely in the areas of Environment and Biodiversity and of Cultural Heritage (two UNESCO chairs at the University of Coimbra),” declared João Nuno Calvão da Silva.
Responding, Quelimane mayor Manuel de Araújo said: “We have identified some of the areas in which the University of Coimbra specialises and we want to benefit from their experience and knowledge, to improve Quelimane’s municipal management and modernise our public administration.”
The ceremony also included speeches by the president of the Portugal Mozambique Chamber of Commerce, Rui Moreira de Carvalho, and the Consul General of Mozambique in Oporto and the North Zone of Portugal, Agostinho Milton.
The signing of the protocol was followed by the presentation of “Quelimane, Uma História Cheia de Estórias” [Quelimane:A History Full of Stories]. The work, organised by Abdul Carimo, António Barros and António Leitão Marques, and with contributions from several former Coimbra University students, was presented by Maria Manuel Leitão Marques, who also wrote the preface.
