The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, said on Tuesday in Abu Dhabi that he was satisfied with the progress of cooperation with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) since his last visit to that Middle Eastern country in October of last year, citing as an example the latest developments in the implementation of a project to build 5,000 houses in urban areas in Mozambique.
Speaking at a press conference covering his four-day visit to the UAE, the head of state explained that, although 5,000 houses project might be considered “incipient” taking into account the demand for housing in Mozambique, especially among young people, implementation of the project would alleviate concern in this domain to some extent.
“With regard to the Defence and Security Forces, this Tuesday morning (17-01) I visited the training centre for special forces here in the UAE, and was satisfied with the work being carried out within the framework of military cooperation. We still don’t have instruments that allow us to move forward, but the work being carried out by the officers is at a very advanced stage,” Filipe Nyusi told journalists.

Still on the balance of his visit, President Nyusi explained that, immediately following his October visit to the UAE, a technical team came to Mozambique, where it travelled along National Road Number 1 from Maputo to Negomane in Cabo Delgado, the result of its survey being presented to the Mozambican delegation this week.
“At the moment we are discussing issues related to the feasibility of the work, since we have intense traffic in certain sections and relatively little in others,” President Nyusi said, noting that the governments of both countries had made clear their determination to move forward with the project, taking into account its importance for the development of Mozambique.
The UAE is negotiating the rehabilitation of 1,500 kilometres of the EN1, including some connecting roads, a part of the project which already has funding secured with other international cooperation partners.

President Nyusi said he was also satisfied with the latest developments with the Khalifa Fund, which will finance SMEs in Mozambique in the amount of around US$25 million. It is expected that an MoU on the matter will be signed in March this year.
In the agriculture sector, the focus is on discussions with a view to exporting chicken produced in Mozambique to the UAE.
During his stay in Abu Dhabi, the head of state and his delegation held meetings with their counterparts from Angola, Uganda and the host country, with whom they discussed issues related to the deepening of bilateral cooperation.
The head of state, who this Wednesday morning left the UAE to return to Maputo, was one of the guests of Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, in the opening ceremony of the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.
This is an international business meeting that brings together around 4,000 dignitaries from around the world and is organized by MASDAR, an Emirates company dedicated to the development of clean energy in the context of the national and international agenda on zero carbon emissions and climate change mitigation.
