Mozambique: Maputo-Luanda flights essential for economic progress - president
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is investing some US$180 million in the expansion and modernisation of Maputo and Nacala ports, AIM Moçambique reports.
After a meeting with President Nyusi, UAE Ambassador to Mozambique Asim Alranhmah told reporters that the initial investment was aimed at equipping the port to receive larger ships and modernising the access rail lines.
Ambassador Alranhmah pointed out that the UAE, currently with investment in Mozambique worth US$2 billion, in 2105 occupied fourth place in the list of countries with the largest foreign direct investment in Mozambique.
“We also talked about investment in Maputo and Nacala ports, and cooperation in the areas of tourism and culture, which we hope will gain new impetus in the coming months,” he said.
Cooperation with Mozambique also includes humanitarian and social assistance, including a project to empower girls in the centre of the country which will reach around 4,000 girls.
“This project, which is budgeted at about US$1,5 million, will last four years, and we expect the first beneficiaries to graduate next year,” Alranhmah said.
In the education field, the construction of a technical-professional training school is under way.
Direct daily flights to Maputo by carrier Emirates Airlines are due to start next year.
