The United States Government will spend approximately US$1.2 billion supporting Mozambique over the five years to 2018 as part of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
“We are proud to have been contributing to the development of Mozambique for nearly 30 years now, and we want to continue improving our support,” said US Ambassador to Mozambique, Douglas Griffiths, yesterday at the signing of a technical and economic cooperation agreement with the Mozambican Foreign Minister, Odemiro Baloi, in Maputo.
The amount will cover the sectors of health, education, environment, democracy and finance development initiatives, particularly in rural areas.
“Our partnership is getting stronger,” said Griffiths, adding that the United States is Mozambique’s “largest bilateral donor”, having given more than US$5.8 billion in financial support to Mozambique since 1984.
Wednesday’s agreement, a continuation of the 2014-2018 five-year strategy, provides US$166 million for projects for the prevention and treatment of HIV/Aids in the country. “The agreement signed today is also a symbol of our maturity,” said the US diplomat.
Responding, Minister Baloi said the funding showed that the United States of America was an “important and consistent” partner and highlighted the U.S.’s role in consolidating peace and development. “We believe that the signing of this important instrument of cooperation will boost our relations in economic diplomacy,” he added.
As part of the support package, the United States will spend about US$104 million improving basic education and US$15 million supporting the Niassa National Reserve in the north of the country.
