December 4, 2024 – The U.S. Government, through USAID and GiveDirectly, is implementing a direct cash assistance project aimed to reduce poverty in rural, disaster-prone farming communities. The communities involved were selected on the basis of need, in coordination with local officials, civil society, and the private sector. The project has no partisan or political affiliations. We strongly refute recent social media claims falsely linking this project to partisan activities.
GiveDirectly is an international non-governmental organization and longstanding partner of the U.S. Government. It addresses poverty in countries around the world by providing unconditional cash assistance to families in need.
In 2021, USAID and GiveDirectly started co-funding cash assistance programs in Mozambique for communities in Sofala Province that were devastated by the effects of Cyclone Idai. In 2024, the project expanded into Mogovolas, with the goal of providing farming households with capital to invest in improving agricultural production, and timed to coincide with the start of the farming season. This program has demonstrated capacity to transform the lives of economically vulnerable Mozambican households by empowering them to prioritize investments in their own futures. For more information on the transformative power of this project, see this video (below).
The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) leads the U.S. Government’s international development and disaster assistance through partnerships and investments that save lives, reduce poverty, strengthen democratic governance, and help people emerge from humanitarian crises.
