U.S. government provides $4.89 million to strengthen Mozambican civil society organizations

The U.S. Embassy in Mozambique announces a new program to support local civil society organizations (CSOs), a crucial institution in any democratic society. The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) will invest $4.89 million over five years to improve the institutional capacity of Mozambican CSOs, helping to ensure their sustainability and contribution to development outcomes in Mozambique.

The program, known as USAID Local Empowerment to Advance Development (USAID LEAD), will work with approximately 25 Mozambican CSOs nation-wide. Activities will include technical assistance, training, mentoring, and coaching individually tailored to the meet the needs of each CSO. Support will focus on strengthening organizational governance, building human resource and financial management capacity, and ultimately improving service delivery to communities most in need. Mozambican training and management firm, Eurosis, will administer this program.

USAID Mission Director Dr. Jennifer Adams stated, “USAID LEAD will help Mozambican civil society to develop a stronger voice, as they advocate for improved services to citizens and greater government accountability.”

USAID’s programming with civil society represents a critical component of broader U.S. Government assistance in Mozambique supporting transparency and accountability in all sectors. In close collaboration with the Government of Mozambique, the U.S. Government provides more than $500 million in annual assistance to improve the quality of education and healthcare, promote economic prosperity, and support the overall development of the nation.
