Two women died in crocodile attacks in Chibuto district, southern Mozambique, during the recent floods, authorities announced on Sunday (26-02).
The two victims were trying to save crops from their flooded vegetable gardens, the last victim succumbing on Saturday, Chibuto district administrator Sérgio Moiane reported.
“They returned to the vegetable gardens just when the reptiles had fled the current of the rivers,” Moiane explained to Radio Mozambique, appealing to the population to stay away from the flooded areas.
“Machambas” (subsistence agriculture plots), are the main source of food for most Mozambican families in rural areas.
The crocodile is among the animals causing the most fatalities annually in the country, having been responsible for 76 deaths in 2020, according to data from the National Administration of Conservation Areas (ANAC). Many incidents are never reported.
The river basins in the south of Mozambique have been flooding since the beginning of the month due to heavy rain in that part of the country.
