A collision between two vehicles on the country’s main road, the EN1, has killed at least 10 people in southern Mozambique, officials have said.
The accident, involving a light truck and a passenger minibus, occurred at about 8:00 p.m. on Wednesda, in the village of Três de Fevereiro, in Gaza province, the result of irregular overtaking and speeding, a police source told Mozambican Television.
The two drivers died at the scene and, in addition to the 10 dead (seven men and three women), four people were hospitalised with serious injuries.
The TVM pictures show two completely wrecked vehicles, and the EN1 was closed in both directions for two hours after the accident.
The head of the provincial traffic police department in Gaza, Artur Tualufo, called for elementary driving safety measures to be observed in order to reduce bloodshed on the nation’s roads.
This is the second serious road accident in less than a week, the first occurring in Nhacudzi and resulting in one death and eight injured.
