During his weekly press briefing on Monday, the spokesperson for the Maputo City Police Command, Orlando Mudumane, told reporters that there have two incidents of car theft in which the thieves shot dead the owners of the vehicles. One of these incidents occurred on 12 September in the Aeroporto A neighbourhood of Maputo, when a motorist tried to resist the theft of his car, and the unknown assailants murdered him.
Two days later a second motorist was shot dead and his car stolen in the neighbourhood of Laulane.
Mudumane said investigations are under way to check whether the same gang committed both murders.
“Motorists should be alert”, he said, “because car theft in which the criminals use guns has become common in Maputo recently. Fighting this type of crime is one of our priorities”.
