The number of Covid-19 infections in Mozambique rose to 31 on Thursday [16 April] with the confirmation of two more positive cases, both related to the investigation and contact tracing originating in Total’s camp in Afungi, Cabo Delgado province.
‘O País’ reports that the South African man and Italian woman are Total employees and had returned to Maputo from Afungi on 02 and 04 April respectively. The Ministry of Health is now tracing the passengers who were with them during the trip from Cabo Delgado to Maputo.
“One of the new positive cases is a South African man more than 30 years old. The other is a woman of Italian nationality over 60 years of age. Both worked in Afungi and are now in Maputo,” National Director of Public Health Rosa Marlene told a daily press conference.
The two were part of a group of 62 samples tested in the previous 24 hours.
So far, Mozambique has tested a total of 855 suspected cases, of which 31 tested positive for Covid-19, two of which are reported to have recovered.
Marlene expressed concern at the high number of people on the streets, despite the social distancing measures introduced by the government, including closing schools and furloughing civil servants and workers from public and private institutions and companies.
At the same press conference, deputy director-general of the National Institute of Health, Eduardo Samo Gudo, said that provincial health directorates were monitoring all individuals in quarantine and were able to intervene in the event of suspected cases.
The National Institute of Health is still analysing 27 samples collected in Afungi this week and will have the results this Friday.
Regarding the citizen who was collected at the Matola multi-hotel, MISAU ensures that local health authorities are following the investigation protocol and this man will be subjected to tests.
