Mozambique: People still in panic after terrorist raids in Memba - AIM report
Two brothers are in custody in Guro district, Manica province, charged with killing their own mother, allegedly because she bewitched them. It is the third homicide of the kind reported between February and May of this year in this part of the country.
Jeremias Raimundo, the younger of the two accused, told reporters he lost his sexual potency, decided to consult traditional doctors, who said that his own mother was the cause of the problem.
“My sex did not rise like other men’s. I walked away from women. The healers tried to heal me,” but without success, according to the young man.
“I killed her because she was a sorceress. It’s my mother, yes, but I’m not sorry because she was a witch,” Jeremias said, going on to accuse the traditional doctors of telling him that, if he acted in this barbarian manner, his ailment would be cured.
Speaking to the press, Manica PRM spokeswoman Elsídia Filipe said that the corporation was concerned about crimes resulting from belief in witchcraft, and was responding by strengthening links with the community and awareness-raising campaigns.
In February of this year, a 27-year-old man was arrested in Manica’s Gondola district on suspicion of killing his mother, allegedly for refusing him food.
In April in Chimoio, a 26-year-old man was charged with murdering his father with a pickaxe for not acknowledging the man’s wife as his daughter-in-law and refusing her entry to the family home.
