The Mozambican Criminal Investigation Police (PIC) has detained two labour inspectors in the northern province of Nampula who were caught in the act of extortion.
A press release from the Labour Ministry named the two men arrested as Carlos Uitresse and Herminio dos Santos Nicolau.
They were surprised as they received money in exchange for favours – they had demanded a bribe for turning a blind eye to violation of the labour legislation by a private college, the Northern Mozambique International School.
They had made arrangements to receive the money at the school, but when they arrived the police were waiting, and immediately arrested them. They will now face both disciplinary and criminal proceedings.
The Nampula Provincial Labour Directorate, the release said, is following the case closely, and urges all employers, trade union bodies and the public at large “to denounce any illicit acts committed by labour inspectors”.
