Two foreign nationals whose identities and countries of origin have not been revealed by the police have been held since December 30 and January 2 respectively, accused of attempting to bribe traffic police in the city of Maputo.
The detainees were stopped by traffic inspection teams but could not present the documents of the car in which they were travelling.
The police arrested one driver, who, finding himself in trouble, “tried to bribe Traffic Police officers with 1,400 meticais”, police spokesman Inacio Dina said.
The driver was then taken to a police station, where family members arrived on January 2. One of these then tried to buy off the police authorities with 10,000 meticais and also ended up in custody.
“We want to stop bribery of the police, because it is a crime,” Dina said, appealing to drivers in general, rather than saving up to bribe the police, to spend the money regularizing their documentation and keep illegal cars off public roads.
A survey by the Centre for Public Integrity indicates that foreign drivers are among the main buyers of driving licenses at the National Institute of Land Transport (INATTER).
