Two dead and several injured in Maputo accident

Two dead and several seriously injured is the provisional count in a road accident which took place this morning on the Avenida de Moçambique in the area of Missão Roque in Maputo. The accident involved a head-on collision between a private vehicle and a minibus travelling in the Benfica-Zimpeto route.
The vehicles were a Toyota Hiace, registration AED267MP, and a Nissan Hardboard, registration MMF44-92.
According to the traffic police, the accident occurred when the minibus driver lost control of his vehicle, crossed the central reservation and crashed into oncoming traffic.
Two people were killed instantly, one of them the ‘Chapa’ collector. The driver is among the seriously injured, and was evacuated to Maputo Central Hospital for treatment. Those suffering minor injuries have been discharged.
Police told the newspaper Noticias that speeding was the likely cause of the accident.
