Two people died and four are missing following a landslide in Gorongosa district, central Mozambique, local authorities told Lusa today. The victims are all members of the same family.
District administrator Pedro Mussengue said that the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. The victims are all brothers who lived near a mountain in the administrative post of Vanduzi, 80 kilometres from the district headquarters.
“It rained a lot in the area,” Mussengue said, causing “a landslide that fell on the houses where the victims lived”.
The victims are all children of a polygamous father married to four women, he explained.
A woman, the mother of one of the victims, was slightly injured in the collapse, he added.
Mussengue said that the place where the landslide took place is difficult to access, which is hampering the search.
“We are sensitising families who live there to leave the place, because these are high-risk areas,” Mussengue said.
Seasonal flooding is normal in Mozambique, but rainfall has been particularly heavy this year.
