Twenty primary schools in the district of Angónia in Tete are being taught each by two teachers, who teach classes from first to the seventh grade. The situation is even more critical in the administrative post of Dómuè where schools have more students.
This is a harsh reality for the teachers, who, even with their redoubled efforts, cannot fully meet the demands of the learning process.
Angónia district has 210 schools of all levels, staffed by 1,597 teachers, and District Director of Education, Youth and Technology Isolda Machado says the district is 265 teachers short.
“We have primary schools where two teachers teach from the first to the seventh grade. We have a teacher who teaches from the first to the fifth grade. We cannot blame the provincial finance directorate, but it is worrisome,” Machado says.
Angónia District Administrator Paulo Sebastião says that the solution to this question is not only hiring more teachers, but also involves reforming the district’s education department itself.
“We have verified these cases. ‘Unplanned’ teachers are inside the classrooms, there are those teachers who are not in school to teach or, on the contrary they are there but are not teaching, we have teachers who do not attend classes as per their schedule,” he said.
It should be noted that the district of Angónia has 210 schools of all levels, assisted by 1,597 teachers.
