Mozambique: From today, Nampula and Zambézia in the path of Cyclone Judy
At least 24 people lost their lives and 54 others were injured, 20 of them seriously, as a result of 27 road accidents in one week on Mozambique’s roads – mostly due to speeding, overtaking and poor pedestrian road sense.
The accidents happened between November 5 and 11. In the same period last year, 33 citizens died and 122 were injured, 42 of them seriously, in 42 road accidents, according to the Police General Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM).
In the same week, the police arrested 166 individuals for various road-related crimes. Twelve were cases of speeding and eight involved pedestrians being run over. These were among the misdemeanours violating the elementary rules of the Traffic Code and putting the lives of road users, and not least the drivers themselves, at risk.
Dozens of people are killed in road accidents on Mozambican roads every week, since, despite calls for caution when driving, there are obviously still people behind the wheel disinclined to exercise the necessary care.
In an attempt to counteract indiscipline on the roads, the Traffic Police inspected 47,815 vehicles, of which 15 were confiscated for various irregularities, and 5,706 drivers were fined for traffic violations. According to the PRM, a further 13 individuals were arrested for illegal driving.
