Twenty three (23) days after the diagnosis of the first person infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus at Total’s facilities, the number of workers at the French oil major leading the Mozambique LNG project confirmed as infected with the new coronavirus rose to 32.
In addition to the four new patients diagnosed in Cabo Delgado on Thursday (23), a new patient was diagnosed in Maputo. Health authorities do not yet know how he contracted the virus.
A further 84 tests on suspected Covid-19 cases were carried out by the National Health Institute from Wednesday to Thursday, of which “68 were negative and five were positive. So Mozambique currently has 46 positive cumulative cases, 38 locally transmitted and eight imported.
“Four of the new positive cases are related to the investigation in the province of Cabo Delgado and one case was registered in the province of Maputo,” National Director for Public Health Dr Rosa Marlene said.
“The first positive case is that of a male person, of Mozambican nationality, over 30 years of age and residing in Cidade da Matola,” Dr Marlene clarified. His infection “is not related to Afungi; how he actually came to be infected is still being studied”.
This is the fifth person infected with the new coronavirus in Maputo province, where there are two of Italian nationality (one over 50 and the other over 20 years of age) and two others, who health authorities have not clearly identified.
The other four new confirmed patients are the Total oil workers, described yesterday by the National Director for Public Health.
“The second positive case is of a male person, of foreign nationality, over 60 years of age, is a resident in Afungi and who was in contact with a confirmed case. The third case is that of a male person, of Mozambican nationality, over 40 years of age and who was also in contact with a confirmed case in Afungi. The fourth case is of a female person, over 40 years of age, of foreign nationality and who was also in contact with a confirmed case in Afungi. The fifth positive case is of a male person, of Mozambican nationality, with more than 30 years of age and who was in contact with a confirmed case in Afungi,” she outlined.
There are now 32 Total workers infected with the new coronavirus. Some are in isolation in Maputo city and others in Pemba.
Twelve COVID-19 recoveries in Mozambique
“As part of the protocol of the Ministry of Health, and because all these new cases are asymptomatic and are in isolation at home, at this moment the process of mapping contacts is taking place as always,” Dr Marlene added. “Regarding the nationality of those infected, we prefer to stop sharing for ethical reasons. Only after informing the persons diagnosed through the correct channels will we share information as to their nationality.”
Without giving further details, Dr Marlene also revealed that four more Covid-19 patients were declared fully recovered over the previous 24 hours, bringing the total number of those recovered to twelve (12).
