Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi will receive his Turkish counterpart in Maputo today Tuesday, as part of an official visit by Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the first of a Turkish head of state to visit Mozambique.
According to a statement released by the Mozambican presidency, Nyusi and Erdogan will witness the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements and participate in a Mozambique-Turkey Business Forum session.
President Edogan is accompanied by his ministers of Foreign Affairs, Economy and Energy and a delegation of about 150 businesspeople.
The visit takes place in the context of “deepening relations of friendship and cooperation”, and is intended as an occasion to review and develop bilateral relations “particularly in the economic and commercial field, where both countries have comparative advantages yet to be explored”, the presidency statement notes.
According to the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique, the Turkish business delegation covers the tourism, energy, mining, transport, construction and infrastructure sectors.
Turkey has drawn closer to Mozambique in recent years, and has become one of the country’s ten largest foreign investors.
At the end of 2015, Turkish Airlines opened a route between Istanbul and Maputo, ending Portuguese airline TAP’s monopoly on direct links between the Mozambican capital and Europe.
The Turkish president began his trip to three African countries with Tanzania on Sunday (January 22), and will travel to Madagascar tomorrow.
