The main road between the city of Nampula and the districts of Meconta, Liupo and Mogincual is increasingly dangerous for drivers. This Wednesday alone, two trucks were to be seen lying flat on the road surface. One of them has been blocking the carriageway for a week already.
The sharp rise in the state of degradation is cited as the reason why a truck loaded with tons of coal fell over this Wednesday.
“The vehicle slid back due to the road. We were climbing a gradient, and the truck couldn’t make it. It ended up sliding back and falling over,” explained truck driver Suahi Yassin.
His assistant and a cargo handler suffered minor injuries in the accident, but the main financial loss was the coal, which spilled out of its sacks.
On the section from Nampula to the administrative post of Corrane, another truck has been immobilised for seven days, again due to road conditions.
The head of Corrane administrative post in Meconta district regrets the state of the road, and says he is looking forward to seeing it re-levelled, as promised by a team from the National Roads Administration.
