Due to the increase in fuel prices bus stops are filled with people. A few ‘Chapas’ [mini-buses] to transport passengers and police officers spread over several points was the scene today in the cities of Maputo and Matola. The situation was most acute in the suburbs, especially Magoanine, Maxaquene and Costa do Sol, in the city of Maputo and Patrice Lumumba and T3 in Matola.
Users interviewed by O País were aghast at the situation and say that the carriers do not accept to carry passengers due to the cost of fuel.
“The situation is chaotic, I am waiting for an hour. The ‘Chapas’ come by, but are not taking passengers, “said Mira Laice, a user at the Magoanine bus stop. “I have been here two hours, only a coaster came by taking passengers. I’m late to work and now I can only give up going to work, “declared Zuleica Inácio, another user.
A mdriver has confirmed that several carriers have opted for parking their cars for good due to the rising cost of fuel.
“What is happening is that carriers prefer parking their cars because fuel is high. And it’s no longer profitable to work well and have to share the value with the patronage. I’m circulating because I work on my own, “said Armenio Banze, a carrier in the neighbourhood Patrice Lumumba.
To ensure safety and avoid demonstrations, several brigades of the Civil Protection and Riot Police,as well as officers of the Municipal Police along with canine force were placed on several bus stops.
The government and transporters associations are in talks on the re-adjustment of increased semi-public transport fare.
