About 150 families in Bairro Inguide, in the municipal district of Katembe, Maputo city, were left without electricity this Sunday due to the theft of a 100-kilowatt power transformer worth around one million meticais [US$13,286 at current exchange rates].
A statement from Mozambique Electricity (EDM) complains that thefts of this type delay the implementation of EDM projects, and undermine customers’ quality of life as well as the government’s effort to fulfil its sustainable development objectives.
EDM calls for the public to help safeguard electrical infrastructure and put a stop to the theft of electricity grid equipment.
