Fifteen students at the Matalana Police Practical School in Maputo province, have been impregnated by their instructors. The Mozambican Police Association has condemned the incidents and says that the General Command must comment on the matter.
The Ministry of the Interior wanted to manage the matter internally, ‘O País’ has learned, but the matter became public when a PRM Commander-General’s Office dispatch on the matter leaked.
Subsequently, PRM Commander-General Bernardino Rafael decided to “institute disciplinary proceedings against the respective instructors; their immediate suspension, and the excuse of the pregnant trainees on condition that they return for the next course”, among other measures regarding logistics and counselling for the 15 young women involved.
Meanwhile, the Mozambican Police Association says that PRM General Command must make a public statement on the matter.
“The General Police Command should go public to clarify this matter, so as not to allow misinterpretations about the Matalana centre, which could be thought of as a place people go to learn deviant things,” Police Association president Nazário Muananbane has said.
The scandal of the pregnant Matalana trainees arises in a context in which the police have been involved in several scandals, such as the murder of activist Anastácio Matavel and the use of excessive force in support of the State of Emergency which claimed at least four lives.
