The isolated province of Niassa in northern Mozambique will once again have access to goods transport by rail from Friday, the promoting company has announced.
The transport will be subsidised by the government with the aim of lowering the cost of living and promoting business, President Filipe Nyusi said the during a visit to the region on 06 June.
A train with 13 armoured wagons left the port city of Nacala for Lichinga, the capital of Niassa, on Wednesday, where it will arrive on Friday, the North Development Corridor (CDN) managing company announced.
The train comprises five cement wagons, an equal number of wheat wagons, a salt wagon, and two gas tank wagons.
For seven years – since the last goods train to Lichinga – the roads were the only choice for transportation.
Since then, Brazil’s Vale, which operates the Moatize coal mines in Mozambique’s Tete province and CFM, has invested 4.1 billion euros in the renewal of the railway and a port terminal in Nacala .
The renovation included the 262-kilometre Cuamba-Lichinga branch line which connects Niassa with the Indian Ocean.
As well as transport coal, the corridor serves the population of northern Mozambique with transportation of passengers and goods.
“This Friday will be recorded in history for the recommencement of freight traffic by rail, fortifying and encouraging the CDN mission,” the company said in a statement.
