Rail passenger fares in the southern region of the country went up on Saturday (February 1), an increase justified by the need to cover maintenance costs and guarantee better quality services, TVM reports.
According to a source in the southern region of the Ports and Railways of Mozambique (CFM-Sul), the trips Maputo – Ressano Garcia or Maputo – Goba, which previously cost 20 meticais, have now gone up to 27 meticais, if tickets are purchased at stations and stops. Tickets bought on board will cost 29 meticais.
For intermediate points, such as Matola-Gare and Boane, passengers now pay 11 or 12 meticais, against the previous 7 meticais.
For long-haul trips, such as to Magude, the new fare is 60 meticais. Manhiça has risen from 20 to 40 meticais, and Chókwè from 80 to 90 meticais, both from Maputo central station.
Passengers from Combomune, M´puzi and Mapai, in the north of Gaza province, will pay 160, 185 and 205 meticais respectively, while connections between the capital and Chicualacuala, on the Zimbabwe border, will cost 240 meticais at ticket offices and 265 on the train. Maputo to Chicualacuala previously cost 208 meticais.
CFM points out that the passenger transport service continues to be a preeminent social good and constitutes the company’s contribution to addressing the challenges of mobility and accessibility in areas without highways.
It notes however that the tariffs are far below those for road transport and also far from covering costs, which explains accumulated CFM losses of around 200 million meticais.
CFM’s southern rail system transports about 14,000 passengers a day, with the Ressano Garcia line the busiest and Goba the least used.
