Train collides with articulated lorry in Machava

An articulated lorry was destroyed in a collision at a level crossing in the Machava area on the outskirts of Maputo by a passenger train bound for Ressano Garcia at around 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

The accident was caused by the driver of the truck ignoring the alert sound signalling the imminent passage of the train at the level crossing giving access to the Liberdade neighbourhood.

The driver of the truck, registration ACX-275-MP and belonging to the company ‘John e Filhos’, was seriously injured.

The train was composed of 12 carriages, most of them carrying passengers, some of whom were so distressed that they fainted, witnesses said.

The articulated lorry was dragged along the line for a distance of about 100 metres, its tractor unit left completely crushed. The lorry was carrying wheat, which was scattered along the railway from the point of impact, and was quickly salvaged by passengers and residents of the surrounding area.

The incident interrupted rail traffic in the Maputo-Goba-Ressano Garcia line for a number of hours.

Seeing that he could not avoid a collision, the driver of the truck threw himself from his cab onto the sleepers and ballast of the railway line. He was immediately apprehended by the police and taken to a nearby health facility with neck and shoulder injuries.
