The Camões-Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo today host at 6:00 p.m. the launch of Traditional Musical Instruments of Mozambique, a book by Júlio Silva.
Published by Paulinas, the book, by ethnomusicologist Júlio Silva, describes traditional musical instruments of Mozambique and will contribute to the knowledge and preservation of the artistic and cultural heritage of the country.
Manuel Tomé points out in the preface that “if we take into account that culture reflects the values won over a historical process and that it is largely the reflection and the way men relate to each other and with nature, how people interpret the world and locate themselves in the world, the accounts and descriptions found in this publication about the musical instruments, their production and use, provide us with valuable information on the historical legacy and the values of our people”.
Júlio Silva was born in 1960 in Bilene, in Gaza. He is a researcher into music and traditional dance in Mozambique, member of the National Council of Arts and Culture of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Mozambique and a member of the National Commission for UNESCO.
He has produced more than 300 music albums within the global Portuguese-speaking community, including three CDs of traditional music and 20 DVDs of Mozambican traditional dance and music. He has directed several documentaries and sat on many musical talent show juries.
The launch will be attended by Minister of Education and Human Development, Jorge Ferrão, Minister of Culture and Tourism, Silva Dunduro, and chairman of Cahora Bassa Hydroelectric, Manuel Tomé.
The event will also be attended by musicians who will offer the audience the opportunity to see and hear Mozambican traditional musical instruments played live.
