Trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries has continued its downward trend in the period from January to May, falling by 14.55% to US$32.735 billion, according to official figures published in Macau.
In the first five months of the year China exported goods worth US$10.421 billion (-14.55 percent year on year) to the eight Portuguese-speaking countries and imported goods worth US$22.313 billion (+2 .37 percent).
With Brazil, China’s largest trading partner globally, trade totaled US$24.053 billion (-9.88 percent), with China exporting goods amounting to US$7.650 billion (-39.19 percent) and imported products worth US$16.402 billion (+16.25 percent).
Second on the list of China’s largest trading partners among the eight Portuguese-speaking countries is Angola with trade in the period amounting to US$5.807 billion (-33.93 percent), a result of Chinese exports worth US$611 million (-67.95 percent) and Angolan exports of US$5.196 billion (-24.49 percent).
After Angola came Portugal with trade totalling US$2.098 billion (+19.80 percent), with Chinese exports worth US$1.561 billion (+36.60 percent) and Portuguese exports amounting to US$536 million (-11.80 percent).
Mozambique appears in fourth place with two-way trade with China worth US$703 million (-30.25 percent), a result of Chinese exports worth US$524 million (-36.05 percent) and Mozambican exports of US$179 million (-5.10 percent).
With other Portuguese-speaking countries – Cabo Verde (Cape Verde), Guinea-Bissau, Timor-Leste (East Timor) and Sao Tome and Principe – trade in the first five months of the year reached US$73 million.
In May trade between China and the Portuguese-speaking countries amounted to US$8.398 billion (+10.36 percent), with Chinese exports falling 2.28 percent to US$2.262 billion and imports increasing 15.89 percent to US$6.136 billion.
