Five districts of two provinces of Mozambique have been thrown into darkness following the fall of a high-voltage tower on Wednesday night in Bárue district.
The affected districts include Mossurize and Machaze in Manica Province and Chibabava, Búzi and Nhamatanda in Sofala.
According to Eduardo Bive, the Director of Transmission-Center at Eletricidade de Moçambique (EDM), the tower fell around the 22:30 hours on January 2 due to strong winds experienced in Manica.
Bive said “after what happened, an inspection team was mobilised and this morning we arrived on the scene and we discovered that this tower fell”.
Since there is no provision for replacement of the infrastructure, EDM has been forced to request the supply of electricity through neighbouring Zimbabwe.
“We are already providing half of the capacity to our customers and we have also activated other alternatives, which is to receive energy from Zimbabwe and continuously the Mavuzi and Chicamba plants that we have been using at peak times,” explained Bive .
For EDM, the bad weather in that part of the country is affecting the replacement of the structure.
It is, therefore, premature to estimate the losses EDM will incur due to the tower damage.
