TotalEnergies’ Startupper of the Year Challenge is back for its third edition in 32 African countries. Its goal is to support young African entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35. The call for projects to participate in the challenge is open for seven weeks, from November 4 to December 23.

All business creation project holders and young innovative start-ups with a positive impact on their communities and the planet can participate.

Under the motto, “Ideas need energy to grow!”, TotalEnergies Marketing Mozambique launched in Maputo last Friday the third edition of “The Startupper of the Year Challenge”.

The challenge is posed to young entrepreneurs on the African continent and aims to develop innovative potential for public health, safety, education, accessibility and other issues that affect local communities.

The competition comprises two phases, one national, whose winners will represent the country in the continental challenge, which foresees the participation of 32 countries, to find the three winners (per category) of the third edition of the TotalEnergies initiative.

In the last edition, in Mozambique, TotalEnergies Marketing Moçambique awarded:

Sebastião Coana, for his initiative ECO PLANET MOZAMBIQUE LDA, which aims at the sustainable development of our economy through the creation of ecological products based on local raw materials, employment promotion and gender balance in the workforce.

Emelito Changadeia, with the response Drinking Water for All, to address the almost global problem of the lack of drinking water in most municipal towns in Mozambique, who authored a project which was an integral part of solving the lack of water in some areas.
Edson Nhancale, who presented the idea of Protected Vegetables-Casa Verde to guarantee the availability of fresh, quality vegetables throughout the year, through practices to respond to climate change.

Marta Uetela and her start-up Minimal LivingBox, dedicated to the design and modular construction based on containers and metal profiles, for homes offices and minimalist business development installations.

Fanny Canet, General Manager of TotalEnergies Marketing Mozambique, said: “Above the entrepreneurial spirit, this third edition of the Startupper Challenge of the Year reaffirms TotalEnegies’ commitment to supporting the socioeconomic development of the countries in which the Company operates in Africa. It contributes locally to strengthening the social fabric, supporting the most innovative entrepreneurs in carrying out their projects.”

Canet notes that the latest edition includes a “Best Female Entrepreneur” category, to encourage female entrepreneurship.

In turn, Luisa Diogo, who sponsors the project, stated that development requires rural and urban inclusion, stressing that the role of the private sector is preponderant in accelerating national wealth, and SMEs should therefore bring the solutions to the country’s challenges.

Candidates for the three categories of the Challenge, namely, “Best Business Creation Project”, “Best Start-up Under Three Years Old” and “Best Female Entrepreneur”, will be evaluated by a local jury composed of experts, personalities from the start-up world and company managers, who will assess the relevance of projects based on their response to the challenges of sustainable development, their innovative character and their feasibility and potential for development.

For the “Best Female Entrepreneur” award, female candidates will be evaluated on their ability to develop actions to promote female entrepreneurship and improve the daily lives of women in their community, as well as the criteria above.

Following the nomination of the three winners per country, an international jury will convene to select three “Grand Winners” for the continent.
