‘Experiences in the Service of the SADC’ is the title of a book by Tomaz Solomão launched here in Maputo yesterday (Wednesday 12-06). The President of the Republic, who was present at the event, highlighted culture as a force for unity and congratulated the author on his initiative.
With versions in English and Portuguese, Salomão’s work gives a personal account of the achievements and challenges of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), in which Salomão served as executive secretary for the eight years from 2005 to 2013.
The book’s 252 pages bring to light his experiences in the organisation, sketching his contribution in the framework of economic integration. The book reveals, however, that 90 percent of the time he served in the SADC was consumed by conflicts in Lesotho, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Madagascar and Zimbabwe.
But Salomão has no regrets. He says it was a worthwhile experience and today, six years later, one he still feels is worth sharing.
Professor Severino Nguenha and writer Nelson Saúte presented the work, taking the opportunity to point out some of the challenges of regional integration.
President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi, who attended the book launch and received a complimentary copy, praised the initiative.
In addition to serving as the SADC’s executive secretary, Salomão, an economist by profession, has held several posts in the Mozambican government, most notably as Minister of Transport and Communications, Minister of Planning and Finance and Secretary of State for Defence.
