Mozambique has expressed its willingness to welcome investments and initiatives that strengthen cooperation in strategic areas such as the blue economy, maritime infrastructure and port security, in order to deepen economic integration and peace in the Indian Ocean region.
This position was defended this Wednesday in Yokohama, Japan, by President Daniel Chapo speaking at the Economic Partnership in Indian Ocean-Africa Forum, held on the sidelines of the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9), a summit that brings together African and Japanese leaders in the search for new dynamics of cooperation.
“In line with our National Strategic Development Plan 2025-2040, we reiterate our willingness to welcome regional investments and initiatives aimed at strengthening economic integration and peace in the Indian Ocean region,” stated President Chapo.
In his opening remarks, President Chapo highlighted the strategic value of the Indian Ocean, not only as a bridge between continents, but also as a catalyst for socioeconomic development, enabling cultural exchanges and access to international markets.
Daniel Chapo also highlighted port logistics, maritime security, with a focus on the Nacala Corridor in northern Mozambique, sustainable tourism, the energy transition, regional trade, technological innovation, and investment in green infrastructure and renewable energy as key areas of cooperation.
Mozambique has approximately 2,700 km of coastline along the Indian Ocean, and more than 60% of its production depends directly on the ocean, the president noted.
“The Indian Ocean-Africa economic partnership plays an important role in implementing the Sustainable Development Agenda, especially in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),” Chapo emphasized.
The President also highlighted the role of African youth in the continent’s growth, advocating for exchange platforms between African and Japanese youth, with a focus on applied science and digital transformation.
“We are open to cooperation in the economic sphere, with countless opportunities in Mozambique, including services, infrastructure, tourism, agriculture, and fisheries, across Southern Africa, the Middle East-Africa, and Asia-Africa. Therefore, our National Blue Economy Development Strategy aims to unite economic prosperity and environmental justice,” stated Chapo.
The president stressed the need for bilateral and multilateral forums that reflect the values of TICAD, African prosperity, international partnership, and people-centered development. In this context, he highlighted Mozambique’s development corridors, which include ports, railways, mineral resources, energy sources, tourism, agriculture, and industry.
The Economic Partnership in Indian Ocean-Africa Forum, held under the theme ” Towards African prosperity through Japan-Indian Ocean Collaboration” was highlighted by the head of state as an opportunity to redefine economic cooperation strategies and address global challenges.
“This Forum not only suggests opportunities for economic cooperation between Africa and Japan, and synergies between Africa, India, the Middle East, and Japan, but also challenges us to renew and define new strategies to respond to today’s global challenges,” Chapo concluded.
