The Orange Farm community is mourning the tragic loss of three-year-old toddler Aisha Kheha.
Her body was found with stab wounds by a man collecting plastic waste in an open veld on Thursday.
The body had been dumped in a plastic bin.
On Friday, the streets of extension 6A were filled with fuming community members, demanding that the perpetrator be caught and brought to book.
Residents, who included members of the ANC Women’s League, had gathered outside Kheha’s home, singing hymns and chanting.
“Who have we wronged to deserve this?” asked an emotional Athilia Vukankulu, Kheha’s aunt.
“My sister and I came to South Africa to work and provide for our children, not to be killed,” said the 23-year-old from Mozambique. Kheha’s mother, Johanna Nyanjani (35), wept uncontrollably.
Vukankulu described the events of Wednesday morning leading up to the family’s discovery that Kheha had gone missing.
She said her sister had left Kheha alone at home when she reported for work, a stone’s throw away.
“Johanna then came to my house to make food for Aisha. After doing so, she decided to leave her in the house. She closed the door and went back to work, just across the road. She thought it was safe.
Little did she know it was the last time she would see her daughter alive,” said Vukankulu, weeping.
She paused, then continued: “Our neighbour asked Johanna if she could use her wood and she agreed. After a while, the neighbour knocked at the house but there was no response.
“However, she assured Johanna that Aisha was in the house. That is when we panicked and realised that Aisha had gone missing.”
On Thursday, the little girl’s body was discovered by an unidentified man.
A devastated Nyanjani said she did not know how she was going to bury her child.
“It is only me and my sister in South Africa. The whole family is in Mozambique, including the father of my child. We request help as we would like the body to be laid to rest at home,” said a tearful Nyanjani.
Gauteng police spokesperson Kay Makhubela said a murder docket had been opened. He appealed to the community for assistance.
“We would appreciate it if the community can work with the police to find the culprits. Anyone with any information should come forward as no arrests have been made yet.
