Three women and one man died when the excavation they were working on to extract sand for construction collapsed, burying them alive in Pemba, Cabo Delgado province.
VOA has established that two women and the man died at the scene, with the third woman dying yesterday morning at Pemba Provincial Hospital.
The accident happened this Monday, 19 September. Local community leader Zito Luis voiced concerns that more bodies may be buried, but the fire brigade, which removed the deceased, did not find any.
The activity is illegal, but it provides many with a livelihood. In addition to adults and teenagers, children also work at extracting sand. Residents have repeatedly asked the city council to discourage the practice and ensure greater security by sealing the site.
