Mozambique police have moved swiftly in the investigation into the murder of Mahamudo Amurane. Weekly newspaper Domingo reports that at least three people have been detained, two of whom were with the deceased at the time of the incident.
Without giving details and talking exclusively to Domingo, the source said that two of those arrested were simply witnesses helping the police with their enquiries but, in view of their statements, suspicions had arisen about them and they were now being treated as defendants.
The relatives of the two detained are outraged and consider the developments illegal, saying they were initially identified as witnesses but had now been accused of involvement in the death of their friend, the president of the municipality.
A third detainee, according to Domingo, is someone linked to MDM who was apprehended on Friday.
