Mozambique to reduce powers of provincial Secretaries of State
Three members of Renamo, including a local leader, have been missing since they were abducted two weeks ago in the Mozambican province of Manica, the provincial president of the Renamo Youth League in Manica, Caetano Augusto, has said, characterizing the political-military situation of the province as “chaotic”.
Augusto said a local financier and a member were abducted in Tambara, a district north of Manica and a third man in Messica.
Caetano Augusto, who is also a member of the Manica provincial assembly, said the political-military situation Manica was “chaotic” and that all the victims were abducted from their homes, one of them already a hiding place.
The first two kidnappings in Tambara occurred between December 4 and 9 and the third on the 13th and the victims’ whereabouts remain unknown. Augusto attributes the abductions to ‘death squads’.
Augusto said that the persecution of opposition members in Manica has risen to new heights in recent times, despite many Renamo members sleeping in hiding places and forests as a safety measure.
He also said that several of the party’s representatives in the Provincial Assembly no longer attend sessions for fear of death, and many are currently no longer in their constituencies as a result of fears for their safety.
Police have not yet commented on the incidents.
