Three Mozambican women have been distinguished for their work on behalf of women’s empowerment in the Books for Peace 2020 International Wards from the Fundação Universitária Vida Cristã (FUNVIC).
The fourth edition of Books for Peace distinguished Mozambicans Anicha Abdul, Eliana Nzualo and Mody Maleiane for their work in women’s empowerment.
The prize, which is organised in collaboration with associations from 61 countries and awarded to personalities who contribute to promoting peace, culture and harmony among peoples, was announced on 12 September at Academic Hall of the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Anicha Abdul, who is a businesswoman and vice-president of the France-Mozambique Chamber of Commerce, created a group of female entrepreneurs who got together to share experiences and learning to grow together, the International Commission of Books for Peace reveals in a statement.
“Anicha writes regularly on her social networks to motivate and inspire other women to pursue their dreams and reach their potential,” the announcement adds.
Eliana Nzualo is a writer, poet, DJ and activist, and represents a new generation of multifaceted artists, moved by causes.
“Eliana embraces feminism as part of her mission,” and recently published her first book, which has been adapted for a play, the award committee statement remarks.
Mody Maleiane is president of Male Holding and executive director of Ideas and Contents of Female Empowerment.
“As a successful businesswoman, Mody has embraced the empowerment of other women, especially vulnerable women,” the prize literature reads. She too has published a book, and is a well-known public speaker.
Books for Peace “hopes that this distinction will serve as an incentive for them to continue working towards the construction of a Mozambican society with greater gender balance” the note from the International Commission highlights.
Among former recipients of the award are Chief Reporter of America Diversity Report Debora Levin, Iranian-Armenian musician Loris Technowarian, journalist and director of RAI-3 Franco De Mare, former footballer Damiyano Tomasi, actor-cum-director Febrijio Borni and Wikipedia chair Matte Rafoni.
As many as 21 prestigious institutions including governments, universities, non-profit organizations, European Union and UNESCO have recognized the award.
