Three people died and 11 were injured on Thursday following riots in the Alto Molócue district in central Mozambique’s Zambézia province, a police source said on Friday.
The victims were hit by stray bullets when the police tried to restore order after a riot broke out as a result of false reports that abducted children were being held in a residence in Alto Molócue, police spokesman Sidner Lonzo said.
In addition to throwing stones at the residence where the children were allegedly being held captive, some individuals looted goods from nearby commercial establishments.
“We had to use all anti-riot means available. Tear gas was used and three people were seriously injured by stray bullets and, unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries,” he said.
The PRM spokesman added that a police investigation of the residence in question showed that the information was false.
A further 11 people injured during the riot were taken to the Alto Molócue Rural Hospital and are out of danger, Lonzo concluded.
